Earlier this year, I received a message that brought tears to my eyes.
A former colleague wrote to tell me about a small act of kindness I showed her when she attended my New Hire Orientation presentation years ago. She mentioned that I shared some encouraging words with her in the hallway afterward that ended up changing the trajectory of her career.
It was such a lovely message, but here’s the wild part. I stared at that message for a long time, trying to remember the moment she described.
I couldn’t.
To me, I was simply doing my job. To her, it was life-changing.
It got me thinking about legacy.
We often think legacy is about:
Grand gestures.
Major achievements.
Awards and recognition.
Things that get written about.
But what if our true legacy is built in small moments that we might not even remember?
Think about the people who made the biggest difference in your life. I bet it wasn’t their achievements that changed you – it was their presence. Not their resume, but their kindness. Not their status, but their humanity.
For me, it was:
👉🏾 The colleague who defended my idea in a meeting.
👉🏾 The friend who called when I was at my lowest point.
👉🏾 The teacher who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.
👉🏾 The stranger who gave me a ride to the bus station during a snowstorm.
These weren’t famous people. They weren’t trying to create a legacy. They were just being human at exactly the right moment.
This realization is both humbling and empowering.
Humbling, because it reminds me that I’m probably walking past dozens of opportunities to impact someone’s life every single day.
Empowering, because it means I don’t need to be famous, wealthy, or powerful to make a difference.
I just need to be present. I just need to be kind.
In our journey toward building a kinder world, I encourage you to:
1. Notice opportunities for small acts of kindness.
2. Remember that every interaction leaves an impression.
3. Focus less on building a legacy and more on building people up.
4. Trust that your smallest gestures might be someone’s biggest moments.
Here’s the truth worth remembering, my friend: You’re already creating a legacy, one small moment at a time.
The question isn’t whether you’ll leave a mark on this world – you will.
The only question is what kind of mark it will be ❤️.
